DIRECTED BLOOD DONATION

The title of this write up is used by the writer to express the practice he implores in his quest to save lives.

For any patient who needs blood transfusion, I always insist on meeting with the family relatives directly.

This is aimed at letting these family members and my would-be recipient know that I am doing this at absolutely no cost to these patients.

Overtime with my blood donation experience, I am well aware that my blood when transfused directly to patients after donation, goes a long way to assist such patients heal faster.

The practise I have always kept to over the years is that of donating blood to a patient only when I am certain that the blood donated by me would be used for the intended patient.

Personally, I do not do blood replacement donations and it is for personal reasons. However, I advocate that we always endeavour to donate to our local blood banks, so that they can be used for sickle cell patients, accident victims, cancer patients, some maternity cases where surgery is needed and any other medical case that requires blood transfusion.

Always know that the demand for blood in our hospitals is outrightly overwhelming and would need your voluntary donation to make up for these demands.

When accident victims are rushed to the Accident and Emergency units of most hospitals, if they require blood transfusion even before their relatives arrive, blood pints are taken from the blood bank to keep these patients alive.

The need for blood pints in our blood banks cannot be over emphasized. Please do your part today and consciously donate blood to a patient who is in need of blood transfusion in the hospital.

Finally, hospitals and blood bank Managers must device ways to appreciate voluntary blood donors nationwide in a way that encourages others to do so. We can have blood donors clubs where criteria for being a member and renewing their membership should be premised upon the number of times one donates blood in a year except in some cases where ill health makes such acts impossible.

  1. I have been a recipient of blood donation that saved my life. It’s a practice we should encourage. Though, we had to bring two people to. replace the two pints given to me at the A&E

    • This here is the reason why we should advocate for more people to donate blood. So, imagine if there was no blood at the blood bank at the point of your admission? Thank God for your life Counsel. This is why we must spread this message.
